Distribution: Widely distributed throughout the world.

Statistics: More than 70 species in Palearctic, more than 300 species worldwide.

Host Plants: Agropyrum, Atriplex, Arrhenatherum, Beta, Calamagrostis, Carex, Chenopodium, Eleocharis, Juncus, Polygonum, Rumex, Salix (Medvedev & Roginskaya 1988).

Comments: The name Tlanoma is considered here as a synonym of Chaetocnema based on the fact that these subgenera have the same type species (C. concinna). For the former members of Chaetocnema s. str. we propose using the name Udorpes properly established by Motschulsky (1845) (Konstantinov & Vandenberg, manuscript). White (1996) erroneously attributed designation of the type species of Plectroscelis to Monros & Bechyne (1956). The type species was designated in 1845 by Chevrolat.

Diagnosis: Body small to medium sized, elongate-ovate, convex to flat from lateral view. Color yellow, brown, dark brown or black, with or without metallic lustre; sometimes elytron and pronotum differently colored.
Head small, hypo-prognathous, broadly oval, convex from lateral view. Frontal ridge usually short, wide and flat (subgenus Chaetocnema s. str.) or narrow more or less acute (subgenus Tlanoma Motschulsky). Antennal calli absent. Orbital line and frontal suture present. Eye small. Clypeus and labrum short. Interantennal space wider or equal to diameter of antennal socket. Antenna 11-segmented, filiform.
Pronotum usually convex, narrowly explanate laterally, without furrow and impressions. Procoxal cavity closed behind. Intercoxal prosternal process narrow, broadly explanate posteriorly. Mesosternum wide.
Elytra oval, convex, with or without humeral calli. Punctation arranged in striae. Striae regular in Tlanoma; irregular in Chaetocnema s. str., especially on disk . Epipleuron sub horizontal, almost reaching posterolateral elytral margin.
Metafemur swollen. Meso- and metatibiae with obtuse tooth beyond middle, followed by excavation having marginal row of stiff bristles. Metatibial spine inserted medially. First metatarsal segment almost as long as following three combined.
