Electronic publishing: Delivering the Goods to the Public
By
F. Christian Thompson
and Jennifer E. Fairman
The World-Wide-Web on the Internet and CD-ROM together provide the
most effective media for delivering biosystematic information to
the World. Systematists need to build WWW sites for their groups.
These sites can be archived periodically onto CD-ROM.
The basic vision is to have a single electronic page for each
species and group of organisms. Classification is handled by an
electronic Tree of Life. Identification will be handled by
interactive expert system. Names and associated nomenclatural and
specimen-based information are served by databases. Also, the
auxiliary information that users want, such as directories of
specialists, organizations, meetings, opportunities for training
and research, is provided. Finally, educational materials need to
be provide for the general public.
This presentation consists of an abstract and list of topics
relating to electronic publishing. Select the highlighted words for
additional information on any topic.
This presentation was given at Entomological Collection Network
meeting, at University of Louisville, on 7 December 1996 and at
Entomological Society of America meeting, at Galt House,
Louisville, on 11 December 1996, in a symposium on Computer and
Software Tools for improving and speeding Biodiversity studies.
