The genus Paramyia consists of 18 species and belongs into the subfamily Phyllomyzinae. Species can be found worldwide, but the highest diversity seem to occur in the paleotropics with several species having been collected in or at the edge of rain forests. The genus can be recognized by the absence of crossvein dm-cu and the presence of a medioreclinate posterior orbital seta.
Females of P. nitens are kleptoparasitic on spiders and reduviids. The biology of the other species is largely unknown, except for P. hungarica, which has been collected on fermenting fruit bait, and P. inconspicua, which has been collected on forest detritus.
