Nearctic Flower Flies

Flower Flies are conspicuous and critical part of the Nearctic fauna. Currently, 891 species of Flower Flies have recorded from the region and are distributed among 89 genera. The last revision of the Nearctic Flower Flies was by Williston (1887). Since that time there have been numerous new species described, some generic revisions, a couple partial revisions (such as Curran 1925 or Vockeroth 1992), a few regional treatments (Metcalf 1913 (Ohio), Fluke 1922 (Wisconsin) and Telford 1939 (Minnisota)). The last published catalog was in 1965; more up-to-date listing of taxa and their names will be found at this WWW site. A basic review and key to genera and the literature is provided by Vockeroth & Thompson (1987). This project will provide HTML keys to the genera and species; a faunistic analysis, links to the appropriate genus and species pages, as well as an index to the literature.
