Classification and Evolutionary Relationships
Order: Diptera. Family: Tephritidae. Subfamily: Trypetinae. Tribe: Carpomyini. Genus: Carpomya.
Author: Costa.
Carpomya belongs to the subtribe Carpomyina of the tribe Carpomyini. Within this
group, the most closely related species may be currently classified in the probably
paraphyletic genus Rhagoletis (Smith & Bush 1999). The phylogenetic
relationships within Carpomya were analyzed by Norrbom (1997) and Jenkins ().

Diversity & Distribution
Carpomya, as delimited by Norrbom (1997), includes six species: C. incompleta
(Becker), C. pardalina Bigot, C. schineri (Loew), C. vesuviana Costa,
C. wiedemanni (Meigen), and C. tica Norrbom. Traditionally, Carpomya
wiedemanni has been classified in the monotypic genus Goniglossum Rondani
(1856), and C. pardalina has been placed in the subgenus or genus Myiopardalis
Bezzi (1910). Carpomya, in the broad sense, is a widespread genus, with one species
known from Central America, and the other five from the Old World (5 in Palearctic Region,
1 in Afrotropical Region, and 2 in Oriental Region).
Spilographa caucasica Bigot (1880) was long placed in Carpomya following
Hendel (1927), but probably based only on confusion with Carpomyia caucasica
Zaitzev (= C. pardalina). It was removed by Norrbom (1997) and belongs in the genus
Chetostoma.

Biology
Species of Carpomya breed in species of Cucurbitaceae (Bryonia, Cucumis,
Citrullus, and Ecballium spp.), Rosaceae (Rosa spp.), and Rhamnaceae
(Ziziphus spp.). The larvae feed in the fruit (Freidberg & Kugler 1989,
White & Elson-Harris 1992).
Economic Significance
Carpomya pardalina is an important pest of cucurbits
