Cryptodacus Hendel
Recognition
Species of Cryptodacus may be distinguished from other Tephritidae by the
following combination of characters: Scutum with medial white or pale yellow vitta or
spot. Vein Cu1 bordered with brown between BM-Cu and discal band and/or
antenna elongate, extended beyond ventral facial margin. Length of vein M from BM-Cu to
R-M/ length from BM-Cu to DM-Cu greater than 0.60. Subapical band and posterior orbital
seta present. Aculeus tip sagittate and finely serrate.
Description
Mostly brown. Body length mm.
Head: Frons, except in C. obliquus, with brown mark between ocelli extended laterally. 2-3 frontal setae. 2 orbital setae, usually well separated (close together in C. obliquus). Ocellar seta usually small (large in C. obliquus). Face usually with brown spot or spots (entirely yellow in C. obliquus). Antenna relatively long, often extended beyond ventral margin of face; first flagellomere length/width (lateral view) 3.0-7.0; apex rounded, without dorsoapical point, tapered or slightly expanded and flattened in sagittal plane.
Thorax: Entirely microtrichose or with bare areas (C. lopezi, parkeri, quirozi) and mostly brown or dark orange. With at least following white areas: dorsal or posterior margin of anepisternum; medial scutal stripe or spot; and apical 1/2 or more of scutellum. Postpronotal lobe usually with white area (small in C. parkeri, absent in C. quirozi). Often with additional white stripes or bands on scutum laterally, transverse suture, notopleuron, and katepisternum. Dorsocentral seta posterior to postsutural supra-alar seta, sometimes closer to postalar seta.
Wing: Length of vein M from BM-Cu to R-M/ length from BM-Cu to DM-Cu greater than 0.60. Subbasal band broad, filling most or all of cell bm and all of cell bcu. Discal band broad, anterior end basally curved, filling base of cell r2+3 and at least part of cell c, usually with narrow basal and apical borders darker than medial part. Vein Cu1 bordered with brown between bm-cu and discal band (except in some C. tau). Subapical band usually faint or weaker anteriorly. Apical band often faint or absent in cells r1 and r2+3. Posterior apical band absent. Accessory costal band usually absent (faintly present in C. obliquus).
Male terminalia: Lateral surstylus elongate, with small mesal lobe near prensisetae. Medial surstylus elongate.
Female terminalia: Aculeus tip sagittate and finely serrate. 2 spermathecae, ovoid or barrelshaped, with long sclerotized base.
