Rhagoletotrypeta annulata Aczél

Except for R. argentinensis, which differs by its very strongly curved subapical
band, R. annulata differs from all other species of Rhagoletotrypeta for
which the female is known by the shape of its aculeus tip, which is flattened in the
sagittal plane and trilobed in lateral view. R. morgantei, which is known only from
the male and also could have this type of aculeus, differs from R. annulata in
lacking apical white bands on abdominal tergites 3 and 4.
The male from Costa Rica has a shorter medial white scutal stripe and more extensive dark brown markings on the back of the head, but is tentatively considered conspecific with the Mexican specimens. Its wing pattern differs from that of the holotype in having the subapical band straight anteriorly rather than basally curved, and the hyaline area between the discal and apical band is extended to vein Cu1, but both of these characters vary within the large Tamazunchale series as does the location of the dorsocentral seta, from slightly posterior to the postsutural supra-alar seta to almost midway between it and the postalar seta.
Classification and Evolutionary Relationships
Order: Diptera. Family: Tephritidae. Subfamily: Trypetinae. Genus: Rhagoletotrypeta.
Species: annulata. Author: Aczél.
Relationships among the species of Rhagoletotrypeta were analyzed by Norrbom
(1994). Click here for more detailed discussion of Rhagoletotrypeta
phylogeny. Rhagoletotrypeta annulata belongs to the annulata species
group and appears to be most closely related to R. morgantei and R.
argentinensis.

Biology
Rhagoletotrypeta annulata breeds in fruits of Celtis pallida Torr.
(Ulmaceae), in northern Mexico commonly known as granjeno huasteco. Other aspects of its
biology are poorly known.
Economic Significance
Rhagoletotrypeta annulata is not considered economically important.
