Rhagoletotrypeta pastranai differs from all other species of Rhagoletotrypeta except R. xanthogastra by the small size of the apical white area on its scutellum. The basal scutellar seta is within the dark brown area. R. pastranai differs from all Rhagoletotrypeta species except R. parallela in having a complete lateral white stripe on the scutum that covers the transverse suture and extends to the intra-alar seta. Other useful diagnostic characters include: Scutum anteriorly with pair of submedial stripes of dense microtrichia; postpronotal lobe entirely white; notopleuron entirely brown; wing with discal and subapical bands divergent anteriorly; accessory costal band at least faintly present; aculeus tip length less than 0.4x aculeus length, apex in ventral view deeply trilobed; 3 spermathecae.

Classification and Evolutionary Relationships
Order: Diptera. Family: Tephritidae. Subfamily: Trypetinae. Genus: Rhagoletotrypeta. Species: pastranai. Author: Aczél.
Relationships among the species of Rhagoletotrypeta were analyzed by Norrbom (1994). Click here for more detailed discussion of Rhagoletotrypeta phylogeny. Rhagoletotrypeta pastranai belongs to the xanthogastra species group, which also includes R. parallela and R. xanthogastra.

Biology
Rhagoletotrypeta pastranai has been reared from fruits of two species of Celtis (Ulmaceae): from C. tala Gill. in Argentina; and C. iguanaea (Jacq.) Sarg. in Brazil (Aczél 1954, Norrbom 1994). In Argentina, the adults were reared from fruit collected in April, 1938 and emerged in November, 1938.

Economic Significance
Rhagoletotrypeta pastranai is not considered economically important.
