Paragodon (Diptera: Syrphidae)

Introduction

Paragodon is small group of minute brown and yellow maculate Flies found only in the New World tropic. All species are very rare, only 4 specimens known. The genus contains only 2 species: One species ranges from Mexico to Costa Rica and other is known from Surinam. This paper presents a revision of the genus, with complete synonymies, descriptions, and distributional and biological data for all taxa.

Taxonomy

Paragodon belongs to the subfamily Microdontinae and may be the sister to all other microdontine Flies [Microdontinae = Paragodon + (Mixogaster + (Rhapolsyrphus + Microdon)), see Thompson & Whitehead (1986) for explanation of cladistic formulae] (Thompson (1969)). The genus is defined (synapomorphy) by its antennal and pleural structure and wing venation: short antenna, bare anepimeron, absence of spurious vein and spur in cell R4+5. Also characteristic are the reduced gena, simple aedeagus and ejaculatory apodeme.
Paragodon is an endemic New World group consisting of 2 known species.
