The male of A. bellicauda differs from all other Anastrepha in its wing pattern and the color pattern and stout setae of the abdomen. In the key of Steyskal (1977), it might run to A. doryphoros Stone, but this species has vein M strongly curved apically and the scutum with non-microtrichose stripes. The female of A. bellicauda will run to A. lutea Stone or A. fractura Stone in Steyskal's key (p. 27). Both have a darker wing pattern and a shorter aculeus (3.0 mm long), and the latter also has a more rapidly narrowed aculeus tip.

Classification and Evolutionary Relationships
Order: Diptera. Family: Tephritidae. Genus: Anastrepha. Species: bellicauda. Author: Norrbom.
Relationships among the species of Anastrepha were analyzed by Norrbom et al. (1999) and McPheron et al. (1999). Click here for more detailed discussion of Anastrepha phylogeny. A. bellicauda has been placed in the schausi species group, which includes three other species.
