The Psylloidea Web Page and its associated database does not represent the efforts of a single person but reflects collaborative efforts of several individuals. We are most grateful for the interest and dedication of Man-Miao Yang, National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan and Daniel Burckhardt, Naturhistorisches Museum Basel, Switzerland, for their willingness to give of their valuable expertise and time in updating the Psylloidea Collection.
Man-Miao Yang, through funding provided by the Smithsonian Institution, worked extensively on a reorganization of the Smithsonian’s National Psylloidea Collection as part of her training as a graduate student in the Maryland Center for Systematic Entomology at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. Upon completion of her degree Man-Miao was gainfully employed first by the National Museum of Natural Science in Taiwan and more recently the Department of Entomology, National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. In 1998, 1999, and 2000, funding was provided by SEL for her to return to Beltsville to continue working on the collection and the database.
Daniel Burckhardt, Naturhistorisches Museum Basel, Switzerland who also was funded by SEL to spend about two weeks for each of 1998, 1999, and 2000 to update the Psylloidea Collection, was also intrumental in the reorganization of the collection. Daniel spent most of his time examining specimens to determine that they were properly identified and labeled them with the currently recognized valid name. He also determined the extensive unidentified material and saw to it that identified specimens were placed in the appropriate areas of the Collection.
With the assistance of Debra Creel, Museum Technician, SEL, a collection database was first developed in AskSam and recently was converted to FileMaker Pro by Bob Carlson, SEL. Bob Carlson is the SEL web master and the one who has solved many of the problems confronted in the development of this web page. Gary Miller, SEL, designed the web page and worked out the intricacies of providing a framework for clients to input queries for capturing data from the Psylloidea Collection Database. Dug Miller, SEL, has provided advice on procedures to be followed in developing the enhanced collection, Psylloidea database, and Psylloidea Web Page.
Special thanks are extended to Ray Gill, California Department of Food and Agriculture, Sacramento, California, for the use of his beautiful psyllid photographs on this web site.
