Sources of Information


As a first step to providing all available systematic information on scale insects the focus has been on information that is published. In future years it may be possible to provide unpublished data especially from collections. The flow of information is through a database called BASIS (Biological and Systematic Information System) developed by Gary Gibson and Jennifer Read, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. In most instances data have been entered into BASIS from comprehensive catalogues and bibliographies. Of the information entered to date, the primary sources of data are:

Major bibliographic information has been compiled using:

Through a series of contracts with Michael Kosztarab, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, USA, bibliographic data has been entered from 1985 to 1995 into a ProCite database. This information has been transported and converted into the BASIS scale insect database.
