The Coccoidea collection and staff are located in room 004, Building 005, Beltsville. The associated library includes 200 volumes and 40 linear feet of reprints. The collection consists of 140,000 slides and has 280 primary types. Also included is a large collection of unmounted dry material which contains several million specimens. Douglass R. Miller curates the Coccoidea and provides identifications of specimens other than those submitted by APHIS/PPQ. Identifications of the latter are handled by Douglas M. Odermatt, an employee of APHIS/PPQ located with SEL at BARC.
Personnel who have been involved in curation of the NMNH scale collection in the past are E. R. Morrison, H. Morrison, S. Nakahara, L. M. Russell, M. B. Stoetzel, and D. J. Williams. The collection has developed into one of the most important in the world, primarily through the efforts of H. Morrison (USDA). Other USDA contributors were C. L. Marlatt and L. M. Russell. The collection is especially strong in New World material, but Africa and Australia are also well represented. Asterolecaniidae, Diaspididae, Margarodidae, Ortheziidae and Pseudococcidae holdings are especially good. Major collections are those of Brain, Comstock, Ehrhorn, and Maskell (in part). The collection also contains many types contributed by Cockerell, Ferris, Morrison, and Russell.
There are two online Coccoidea databases accessible on this web site from the Coccoidea site. Scalenet, a joint, ongoing project, incorporates biosystematic information on the scale insects of the world. The major push currently is the addition of information for the family Diaspididae. The separate Coccoidea database is an inventory of the material in the NMNH Coccoidea collection.
