The fruit fly databases available on this site can be downloaded or searched online. The download versions use the FileMakerPro Runtime platform and do not require you to have additional software. If you have complex questions or wish to search, sort, or print the data in various ways, downloading one or more of these file sets is the better option. If you have simple questions, such as the correct spelling for a species name, what species occur in a particular area, or which ones attack a particular host, you can obtain this information more rapidly online. |

Fruit
Fly Names and Bibliography Database |
This database comprises 4 related files (Family, Genus, and Species Group Names and Bibligraphy) and covers all species of fruit flies in the world based on publications through 2003 (some data from 2004 publications have also been entered). It includes basic information such as the valid names, synonyms and other invalid names that have been used for fruit flies, type data, and general distribution information. The bibliography is focused on the taxonomic and natural history literature, although many publications concerning other aspects of fruit flies are included. This database is a subset of the Biosystematic Database of World Diptera which should be consulted for information about other families of flies. See the Help file (for download version) for further details. Fruit Fly Host Plant Database |
This database includes host plant information, including the valid names and those used in original publications for both the fly and plant species. It is complete only for Anastrepha and Toxotrypana, the largest and most economically important genera of fruit flies in the Western Hemisphere, but data for other fruit fly species from the Americas are being entered. F. Louie Blanc New World Fruit Fly Specimen Database |
This database is a working tool containing collection information from specimens of fruit flies from North, Central and South America (Nearctic and Neotropical Regions). Many of the data were compiled by F. Louie Blanc and used to produce the distribution maps in the Handbook of the Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) of America North of Mexico (Foote et al. 1993), but not all data for the mapped localities in that work have been entered. Other data have been entered from an identification notebook of Alan Stone and Richard Foote, and data for numerous additional specimens examined by A. L. Norrbom or reported in the literature have also been added. Although this database is far from comprehensive, it is made available here as a tool for other reseachers or anyone else interested in New World fruit flies. Contributions of additional records are welcome. As of July, 2004 the database contained more than 17,000 records, of which more than 12,000 are from the United States or Canada. The following fields are included, although not all are searchable online: Country, Political Unit1 (State, Province, Department, etc.), Political Unit2 (County, etc.), Locality, Latitude and Longitude, Label Data, Host Plant, Date, Collector, Number of specimens, Sex, Types, Museum, Barcode, Altitude, and Identifier. See the Help file (for download version) for further details. Search The New World Specimen Database Download The New World Specimen Database Set [ Win Zip Archive - Contains FMP files only 5.5mb ] |
